Bhopal, June 10: A political storm has erupted in Madhya Pradesh following the cancellation of Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections. Congress leaders took to the streets, staging a protest outside the Election Commission office in Bhopal. Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh declared that the cancellation of Meenakshi’s nomination is unconstitutional, labeling it a blatant “theft of the seat.”
On Wednesday morning, Singh took to social media platform X, stating, “This is a murder of democracy. The cancellation of Meenakshi’s nomination is illegal. There is no FIR or registered case regarding the issue that led to this cancellation. Only a notice was issued, which does not even need to be mentioned in the nomination papers. This is outright ‘seat theft.’ Our struggle will continue.”
Earlier, former Chief Minister Kamal Nath also expressed his concerns on X, stating, “The cancellation of our Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination from Madhya Pradesh is entirely unconstitutional and undemocratic. This incident shows that the Bharatiya Janata Party is killing democracy and the Constitution in the country. The Congress party will fight against injustice at every level.”
The Congress party asserted that the Election Commission canceled Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination without any valid reason. They described this as a direct attack on democracy and an assault on Baba Saheb’s Constitution. They vowed to protect democracy at all costs.
In response to the nomination cancellation, Madhya Pradesh Congress in-charge Harish Chaudhary, state president Jitu Patwari, and CLP leader Umang Singhar, along with several other leaders, protested outside the Election Commission office. They remained steadfast throughout the night. Jitu Patwari stated on X, “We will continue our indefinite protest until the Election Commission meets with us to hear our demands. Let’s see how long the BJP and the Election Commission sit on the pyre of democracy.”
