New Delhi, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : Udit Raj, a prominent Congress leader, has responded to the recent protests organized by the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) in New Delhi. He emphasized that the demonstration was not solely a CJP initiative but involved multiple organizations, including the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which played a leading role.
Raj pointed out that while the CJP has been the face of these protests, a coalition of various groups participated. He recalled the continuous protests that took place at Jantar Mantar earlier this year, asserting that the name CJP often overshadowed the collective effort of many organizations.
Criticizing the central government, Raj stated that the current situation represents the peak of tyranny, with areas around Parliament, Hanuman Road, Ashoka Road, and Jantar Mantar resembling a prison due to internet shutdowns. “The government is afraid,” he remarked.
On Friday, Raj, along with Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, met with President Droupadi Murmu. During this encounter, the President requested evidence of the alleged irregularities, seemingly acknowledging that there are issues to address.
When questioned about Congress’s perceived distance from the CJP protests, Raj explained that the opposition coalition, known as the India Block, is actively engaging in various forms of protest, including events at Rajghat and All India Radio, despite facing arrests. He noted that Rahul Gandhi’s outreach to students demonstrates their commitment to the cause.
In response to BJP MP Sambit Patra’s derogatory remarks about Rahul Gandhi, Raj defended Gandhi, suggesting that such insults reflect a lack of maturity on Patra’s part.
Raj also addressed comparisons made by Mehbooba Mufti between the current situation in Delhi and Kashmir during the abrogation of Article 370. He acknowledged that while both scenarios involved heavy police presence, the contexts differ significantly. He stressed that the current struggle is to protect the Constitution, claiming that the Election Commission has become a tool for the BJP.
Reacting to BJP President Nitin Naveen’s comments about a dangerous situation in the country, Raj stated that the ongoing threats to democracy are alarming. He argued that the BJP is undermining the very democratic fabric that India is known for.
Following the meeting with the President, Raj supported Kharge’s call for elections to be conducted using ballot papers rather than electronic voting machines (EVMs). He pointed out that even advanced countries, where voters are educated and institutions are respected, have reverted to ballot papers, suggesting that India should do the same.
