Kolkata, October 11 (Daily Kiran) : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal is set to invite applications from professionals interested in contesting the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections, scheduled for the end of this year. This initiative was announced by Sukanta Majumdar, the BJP MP from Balurghat and Union Minister of State.
A drop box will be placed at the party’s old state headquarters on Murli Dhar Sen Lane in central Kolkata, allowing professionals from various fields to submit their applications for the KMC elections. Majumdar, who heads a four-member committee overseeing the election preparations, expressed the party’s desire to encourage successful professionals—such as engineers, doctors, lawyers, journalists, and social workers—to step forward. He emphasized that these candidates could significantly contribute to improving civic amenities in the KMC area.
In selecting candidates, the party will prioritize individuals with a clean image and public acceptability. This focus is why they are reaching out to accomplished professionals from key sectors.
The drop box at the party office will be available starting Monday, and Majumdar noted that interested professionals could submit their applications during office hours.
Additionally, a member of the state committee highlighted that healthcare services are among the most critical responsibilities of the municipal corporation. They noted that if successful and active doctors were elected as councilors, it would lead to significant improvements in health services. Similarly, engineers could play vital roles in various departments, including assessment, tax collection, and building management. Legal professionals would also enhance the KMC’s legal department, an area that previous political parties have overlooked.
Voting for the new KMC board is expected to take place in the last week of November, with results likely to be announced in the first week of December.
