Congress Hits Back at Critics in Tamil Nadu Political Landscape

Chennai, May 25: Amid ongoing discussions about alliances and electoral strategies in Tamil Nadu, the Congress party has sharply responded to its critics. Girish Chodankar, the Congress in-charge for Tamil Nadu, stated on Sunday that while political parties are free to criticize Congress and its leadership, they should not disrespect the mandate and decisions of the Tamil Nadu electorate.

Chodankar took to the social media platform ‘X’ to express his views, noting that criticism of political parties is a normal aspect of democracy. However, questioning the people’s decisions is unacceptable. He remarked, “If you want to attack us, you can, but do not attack the people of Tamil Nadu who voted for us.”

He emphasized that the people of Tamil Nadu have consistently demonstrated political wisdom and maturity. They have exercised their voting rights with clarity and understanding. According to Chodankar, political differences should not undermine the decisions made by the electorate.

The Congress leader mentioned that the party has always refrained from responding to personal attacks on its leaders and organization, maintaining restraint in political discourse. However, he indicated that Congress could remind people of the “major betrayal” when the DMK severed its alliance with Congress after nearly a decade, just before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Chodankar did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the alliance’s breakup but hinted that despite ongoing criticism, Congress has tried to avoid reigniting old political disputes.

He reiterated that Congress has always respected public opinion and electoral outcomes with humility and generosity. Following recent electoral developments in Tamil Nadu, the dynamics of alliance politics and shifting political equations continue to be hot topics of discussion. Chodankar reiterated that while political parties can engage in ideological battles and critique one another, the democratic decisions of voters should be held above political attacks.
