Congress Faces Setback as Candidates Nomination Rejected in Assam Elections

Guwahati, March 26: The Congress party has suffered a significant setback ahead of the Assam Assembly elections. The nomination of their candidate, Mahananda Sarkar, for the Barpeta seat was rejected during scrutiny on Wednesday.

According to election officials, Sarkar’s nomination was declared invalid due to discrepancies found in ‘Form-A’. This form is a crucial document that certifies the official candidates of recognized political parties. The decision came after a detailed hearing conducted by the returning officer.

Officials stated that the nomination was canceled under the Representation of the People Act and the guidelines of the Election Commission due to inconsistencies in the submitted documents.

An official remarked, “After the completion of the verification process, Mahananda Sarkar’s nomination from Barpeta has been rejected due to irregularities in Form-A.”

Following this decision, Congress has been eliminated from a significant contest in Barpeta before the voting even begins, dealing a major blow to the party’s prospects.

Sources indicate that the discrepancies in Form-A were revealed during the verification process, leading to objections and a thorough investigation. During the hearing, Congress presented arguments, but the returning officer upheld the objections and rejected the nomination.

However, Congress has yet to release an official statement regarding this matter. Internal sources have described the situation as “unfortunate” and mentioned that they are considering legal options, including approaching the Election Commission.

Barpeta is considered a politically significant seat, and this turn of events could alter the electoral dynamics, potentially benefiting other candidates.
