Rescue Operation Successfully Evacuates Tourists in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, March 30: A rescue operation in Jammu and Kashmir successfully evacuated 22 vehicles carrying tourists and other travelers on Monday. The operation was initiated after heavy snowfall and landslides blocked the Bandipora-Gurez road.

Officials reported that the district administration of Bandipora collaborated with the Mechanical Engineering Department (MED) and the Border Roads Organization (BRO) to assist in the safe extraction of vehicles and tourists stranded in the Gurez Valley due to the adverse weather conditions.

The sudden accumulation of snow, mudslides, and falling rocks led to the blockage of the road, particularly near Razdan Top, where the 22 vehicles transporting tourists and travelers became trapped in multiple locations.

The situation worsened due to strong winds and stormy weather, presenting significant challenges to the rescue teams. Upon receiving SOS messages from stranded tourists, the district administration acted promptly.

Indu Kanwal Chib, the Deputy Commissioner of Bandipora, closely monitored the rescue process and issued necessary directives to all relevant departments to ensure the safety of the stranded travelers.

The MED and BRO teams launched a daring and timely operation under extremely challenging conditions. They worked tirelessly to clear snow and debris, restore communication, and ensure the safe passage of the stranded vehicles.

All trapped tourists were safely evacuated, and essential assistance, including medical aid, was provided on-site.

Continuous rainfall in the plains and light to moderate snowfall in the mountains severely impacted daily life in the Union Territory on Monday. The weather department has indicated that this weather system will persist until Tuesday evening, after which conditions are expected to improve.

District administrations in the Ganderbal, Anantnag, and Kupwara districts have issued warnings for areas at risk of avalanches, advising residents to leave their homes only if absolutely necessary until the warnings are lifted. Farmers and those involved in agricultural activities have been advised to postpone their work until April 1.
