New Delhi, March 30: The Central Election Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its candidate for the upcoming by-election in Gujarat. Following the death of BJP MLA Govindbhai Parmar, the party has nominated his son, Harshadbhai Parmar, for the Umreth assembly seat.
The by-election was declared earlier this month after the passing of Govind Parmar, who represented the Umreth constituency in the 2022 Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections. He secured 95,639 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Congress candidate Jayant Patel, by a margin of 26,717 votes. Govind Parmar first won the seat in the 2017 Gujarat assembly elections, beating Congress’s Kapilaben Gopal Singh Chavda by 1,883 votes. He passed away on March 6, 2026, after a prolonged illness at a private hospital in Anand. Prior to this, the BJP appointed former Gujarat minister Pradipsinh Jadeja as in-charge for the upcoming by-election in Umreth.
The Umreth assembly seat is part of the Anand Lok Sabha constituency, which includes areas from both Umreth and Anand talukas, featuring several villages and urban regions. In the 2022 state assembly elections, Govind Parmar won this seat by a margin of over 26,000 votes.
According to the Election Commission, voting will take place on April 23, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. More than 2.4 million voters are registered in this constituency. Voting will be conducted using electronic voting machines and VVPATs at polling stations. Administrative preparations, including the appointment of nodal officers and training of polling personnel, are already underway in accordance with the Election Commission’s guidelines.
