IPL 2026: Gujarat Titans to Kick Off Campaign Against Punjab Kings with All Eyes on the Captains

New Chandigarh, March 30: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 will see its fourth match played on Tuesday between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. Both teams are eager to start their campaigns on a high note.

The spotlight will be on two key players of Indian white-ball cricket, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. Shubman Gill will lead the Gujarat Titans, while Shreyas Iyer will captain the Punjab Kings.

This IPL season is particularly crucial for Gill. He has a chance to reclaim his spot in the Indian T20 team. Gill is currently the captain of India’s ODI and T20 teams. Despite being appointed as the vice-captain of the T20 team, he missed out on the T20 World Cup squad due to a dip in form.

With Hardik Pandya leaving the team after the 2023 season, there is increased focus on Gill’s captaincy. Since winning the title in their debut season in 2022, the Gujarat Titans have established themselves as a consistently strong team, regularly reaching the playoffs. They are entering this new season with a solid and stable lineup, having retained most of their key players. Once again, they will heavily rely on their robust top order.

The opening partnership of Gill and Sai Sudharsan is a crucial pillar for the team. Sudharsan was the leading run-scorer last season, amassing 759 runs. After recovering from a rib injury, Sudharsan is set to return to the squad. His recent domestic form, which includes a century and several half-centuries, indicates that he can pick up right where he left off.

On the other hand, Gujarat also boasts depth in their reserves. Young wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Kushagra has emerged as a promising option, showcasing impressive stats with a strike rate of over 160 in domestic T20 cricket.

Both Gill and Iyer are eager to make their mark, making this season opener more than just a game. It serves as an early test of leadership, adaptability, and intent.
