New Delhi, August 22: An FIR has been registered following a complaint from Sahil Lochab, a student injured during a protest at Jantar Mantar. The Congress party has attributed this development to the persistent efforts of Rahul Gandhi. Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and senior leader Jairam Ramesh took to social media platform X to criticize the Delhi Police and the central government.
K.C. Venugopal stated that after hours of protests and demands for an FIR from Rahul Gandhi, the Delhi Police finally yielded. He claimed that this was a cognizable offense and that the FIR should have been filed immediately under normal circumstances. However, he accused the Delhi Police of delaying action. Venugopal emphasized that the eventual filing of the FIR reflects the struggle citizens face to uphold their basic constitutional rights.
Meanwhile, Congress senior leader Jairam Ramesh asserted that the FIR was only possible due to Rahul Gandhi’s determination and relentless efforts. He noted that the action came after Gandhi’s nearly six-hour sit-in outside the Parliament Street police station. Ramesh alleged that Sahil Lochab, a student from Haryana, suffered severe injuries, including the loss of vision in one eye, due to the use of pellet guns during the protest. He claimed that this was orchestrated at the behest of the central government, which had previously stalled the FIR.
It is significant that the FIR was filed against unidentified individuals after Rahul Gandhi’s prolonged demonstration outside the Parliament Street police station. In his complaint, Sahil Lochab alleged that on July 20, during a student march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament, metal pellets were fired at him. He reported that this incident resulted in the loss of vision in his right eye and left over 200 pellets embedded in various parts of his body.
Sahil stated that he is a student at the School of Open Learning (SOL) at Delhi University and was participating in a peaceful protest. According to him, he was shot multiple times with pellets amid a police baton charge and ensuing chaos, leading to his serious injuries.
The Congress party is framing this incident in the context of student rights and police action, while the investigation is now underway by the Delhi Police.
