Nepal, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : A team of over 50 researchers from more than ten universities and research institutions in China has set off for Nepal to conduct a joint scientific investigation. This expedition, which departed from Chengdu on October 4, aims to respond to the geological emergency triggered by a glacier collapse in the Himalayan region on August 26.
The glacier’s sudden failure in northern Nepal resulted in a devastating landslide that caused significant casualties. The impact was felt across the border, particularly affecting the Gyirong Port area in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
Investigating such disasters requires a comprehensive approach, as a unilateral investigation cannot fully capture the event’s complexities. Therefore, the on-site investigation in Nepal is crucial for reconstructing the entire sequence of events surrounding the disaster.
The scientific team will utilize advanced technologies, including UAV aerial surveys, helicopter reconnaissance, and field geological logging and sampling. These methods will help clarify the processes involved in the flow of snow and rock debris, landslides, and the transformation of debris flows in a systematic manner.
This collaborative effort underscores the importance of cross-border scientific research in understanding and mitigating the impacts of natural disasters.
