Dehradun, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Congress leader Harish Dhami has launched a strong attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that the central government is using investigative agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to target political opponents. His comments come in light of recent ED actions involving Chandan Geena, a former officer on special duty for ex-Chief Minister Harish Rawat, who reportedly had ₹32 lakh, approximately 200 grams of gold, and several luxury watches seized.
Dhami questioned whether possessing such assets constitutes evidence of corruption, stating that it is not unusual for someone with a long career to accumulate wealth. He emphasized that Congress leaders and workers are not intimidated by the actions of investigative agencies. “Congress has fought against oppression during colonial rule, and we will not be cowed by the ED or CBI,” he asserted.
He further probed the rationale behind linking Geena’s assets to corruption, noting that given the fluctuations in gold prices, such wealth could simply be a result of savings over time. Regarding the luxury watches, he asked how a gift could be construed as corrupt. Dhami also raised concerns about the timing of the ED’s investigation, questioning why it surfaced after so many years.
The Congress leader challenged the BJP government to investigate corruption allegations related to the Uttarakhand Assembly and former minister Premchand Agarwal. He demanded that the ED also look into cases involving substantial financial transactions and appointments that have raised eyebrows. Dhami insisted that the scope of investigations should not be limited to politically connected individuals but should encompass corruption across various sectors, including mining.
He remarked on the historical struggles of the Congress party, asserting that if Congress leaders could stand against colonial rule, they would not fear the current actions of the ED and CBI. Dhami also made pointed remarks about the BJP’s role in the freedom struggle, urging its leaders to reflect on their political history before discussing issues like corruption and employment.
In light of the ongoing controversy surrounding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother, Dhami accused the BJP of hypocrisy. He argued that while respect for mothers is paramount, BJP leaders have made derogatory remarks about Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. He called for consistent standards regarding respect for family members in political discourse.
Additionally, Dhami demanded an investigation into government spending on media advertisements in Uttarakhand. He claimed that substantial funds are being allocated to media outlets that previously received limited advertising budgets. He promised that if Congress returns to power, they would scrutinize the advertisement expenditures to ensure proper use of public funds.
He concluded by stating that he is not afraid of any potential repercussions from the government. Dhami plans to reveal names and purported evidence regarding individuals close to the Chief Minister who are allegedly involved in financial misconduct. He also accused certain officials in the secretariat of being complicit in corruption.
Looking ahead to the 2027 assembly elections, Dhami criticized the BJP for failing to address pressing issues for the youth and the people of Uttarakhand. He accused the party of fostering division and distracting from development. He urged BJP leaders not to slander political opponents or misuse investigative agencies for political leverage.
