Bhopal, June 3: Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath has expressed deep concern regarding the rising number of HIV-positive pregnant women and newborns in the state. In a recent statement, Nath highlighted that over 200 HIV-positive children have been born in Madhya Pradesh over the past five years, which is alarming. Additionally, during the year 2025-26, 743 pregnant women were found to be HIV-positive.
Nath described the situation as critical, noting that despite the severity of the issue, proper testing and access to medication for pregnant women are severely lacking. He emphasized that such negligence regarding HIV cases is unacceptable.
The Congress leader urged the BJP government to take urgent measures to address this serious health crisis. A report has revealed that the number of HIV-positive pregnant women in the state has increased by 45 percent over the last five years. Furthermore, 201 newborns born during this period have also tested positive for HIV, with their mothers similarly affected.
Currently, health services in the state have become a political issue. The Congress party has accused the state government of mismanaging healthcare services, resulting in inadequate access to necessary medical facilities for the public. There are numerous vacant doctor positions, and hospitals lack essential services for patients. Meanwhile, the government claims improvements in healthcare services, stating that medical colleges are being established in every district and that access to healthcare in remote areas is being enhanced.
