New Delhi, August 10: The performance of India at the Commonwealth Games 2026 has been historic. The nation secured a total of 39 medals, including 13 golds. On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the athletes who brought medals to the country at his residence. During this meeting, silver medalist boxer Narendra shared an interesting story involving a Pakistani boxer.
Narendra recounted his experience at the 2015 World Military Games, where his first fight was against a Pakistani boxer. He mentioned receiving a call from the military instructing him not to lose to Pakistan, no matter what. Narendra successfully won that first bout with a score of 4-1. However, he faced tough competition in the second bout. Despite the challenge, he managed to win that match as well, 3-2, although both boxers ended up colliding heads, resulting in cuts.
According to Narendra, both he and the Pakistani boxer were hospitalized afterward. He also revealed that his coach from the Indian Army shared the same name, Narendra Rana. During their conversation, the Pakistani boxer humorously remarked to Narendra, “I have come to hate the name Narendra, as you, your coach, and even your Prime Minister share that name.” This amusing anecdote brought laughter from PM Modi.
Narendra excelled in the 90-plus category, earning a silver medal. However, he fell just short of gold, losing 0-5 in a one-sided final against England’s Damar Thomas. Nevertheless, the performance of Indian boxers at the Commonwealth Games 2026 was remarkable, with both the men’s and women’s teams collectively securing a total of 10 medals.
