Patna, May 9: In a significant anti-corruption drive, the Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) arrested a clerk at the Sono Primary Health Center in Jamui, Bihar, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹37,000 on Friday.
The accused, Rupesh Kumar, is charged with soliciting money from an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) in exchange for processing her pending salary.
According to the complaint, the victim, Rajnandini, had not received her salary for nearly 11 months. She alleged that the clerk demanded a sum equivalent to one month’s salary as a bribe to initiate and expedite the payment process.
Rajnandini reported that demands for illegal payments had been ongoing since February 2025. Following the complaint, the vigilance department conducted a preliminary investigation and confirmed the allegations.
Based on the investigation, officials registered a First Information Report (FIR) and set a trap. The vigilance team caught Rupesh Kumar red-handed while allegedly accepting ₹37,000 in cash from the complainant.
The ANM stated that the delay in salary payments had caused her severe financial distress. She claimed that to pay the demanded bribe, she had to mortgage her land.
On March 23, she filed a formal complaint with the vigilance department, prompting the investigation. Rajnandini further alleged that such corrupt practices were openly occurring at the health center, with the knowledge of the PHC in-charge, Shashi Bhushan.
She also claimed that several other female employees had been coerced into paying bribes of around ₹6,000 but refrained from filing complaints due to fear and pressure.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar confirmed the arrest, stating that the allegations were verified before action was taken. He noted that the FIR was registered based on Rajnandini’s complaint, and after confirming the facts of the case, Rupesh Kumar was arrested on Friday while accepting the cash. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
