Washington, 30 December. According to US reports, the CIA carried out a drone attack on a dock facility off the coast of Venezuela in early December. This is said to be the first ground attack inside the South American country under the Trump administration.
US media claim the CIA destroyed a ‘drug traffickers’ dock’ in Venezuela. CNN, citing anonymous sources involved in the operation, reported on Monday night (local time) that the strike targeted a remote dock. US officials believed it was being used by a gang in Venezuela to store drugs and ship them via boats.
Xinhua, referencing CNN, claimed that no casualties occurred during the attack.
President Donald Trump on Monday asserted that the US attacked a dock in Venezuela allegedly used by drug traffickers. According to Xinhua, if true, this would be the first known ground attack on the oil-rich South American nation.
Speaking at a press conference in Florida, Trump said, “There was a powerful explosion at the dock. That area was being used by those involved in drug trafficking.”
He added that first all the boats were targeted, followed by the destruction of the dock itself — the area from where the traffickers operated. “But now they will not be able to do so anymore,” he said.
Although Trump did not name any US agency, some reports described the attack as a CIA drone strike. However, there has been no official confirmation.
There has been no response from the Venezuelan government, while US agencies including the CIA, Pentagon, and White House have declined to comment. The incident is being viewed as part of America’s anti-drug trafficking campaign.
Trump first revealed the strike in an interview with WABC Radio on Friday, stating that his administration had destroyed a “large centre” allegedly producing illegal drugs in Venezuela.
In the phone interview, he said, “We just destroyed it — I don’t know if you read or saw — they have a large plant or facility where ships come and go. Two nights ago, we destroyed it; we took very strong action against them.”
The US has been increasing its military presence near Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea for months, calling it an anti-narcotics and anti-terrorism campaign. Since September, it has attacked and destroyed about 30 alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific regions, resulting in more than 100 deaths.
Venezuela has accused Washington of interfering in Latin America.
On Friday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro expressed willingness to engage in talks with the US based on mutual respect and appealed to America not to interfere in Venezuela’s internal affairs.
