China to Implement Zero Tariff for 20 African Nations Starting May 1

Beijing, April 29: The State Council of China has announced that starting May 1, 2026, it will implement a zero tariff policy for 20 African countries that have established diplomatic relations with China and are not classified as the least developed countries. This preferential tariff rate will remain in effect until April 30, 2028.

For products subject to tariff quotas, the tariff rate within the quota will be reduced to zero, while the rate outside the quota will remain unchanged. During this two-year implementation period, China will continue to promote the signing of economic partnership agreements with the relevant African nations.

It is noteworthy that for 33 least developed African countries that have established diplomatic relations with China, a zero tariff has already been applied to all their tariff lines since December 1, 2024.

The extension of zero tariffs to the remaining 20 African countries reflects China’s proactive stance in expanding high-level openness. It plays a significant role in strengthening China-Africa economic and trade cooperation and promoting the construction of a shared future community between China and Africa in the new era.
