Washington, July 16: President Donald Trump has announced a significant initiative to revive American shipbuilding. He stated that his administration aims to boost domestic ship production, collaborate with foreign partners to accelerate construction, and rebuild the U.S. naval industrial base after decades of decline.
During the Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit on Wednesday, Trump emphasized that revitalizing shipyards and increasing naval production has become a national security priority. The U.S. seeks to modernize its fleet and strengthen military readiness.
Trump remarked, “We need a lot of ships for our Navy. Despite having the largest navy in the world, our vessels are aging, and we are truly falling behind in this area.”
The President announced that the administration will construct two multi-mission national security vessels at the historic Philadelphia shipyard. He indicated that Washington is prepared to purchase ships built overseas while rebuilding its industrial capacity.
“We will likely focus on some companies coming from South Korea and other places that are working with us on ships, and we will also purchase some vessels made outside this region,” Trump added.
He noted that many American shipyards have disappeared after being converted into waterfront real estate developments, causing the country to lag in naval construction.
“We used to build one ship a day, and now we are falling behind. Many of our shipyards have been sold for waterfront real estate projects,” Trump stated.
Hanwha Defense USA, which now owns the Philadelphia shipyard, announced plans to significantly increase American production capacity. CEO Michael Coulter mentioned, “Our shipyard in Korea builds about one ship per week. Our plan is to bring that capacity to Philadelphia as well.”
Coulter expressed the company’s ambition to make Philadelphia a major center for U.S. naval construction, stating, “Ships win battles, shipyards win wars. This is going to be the home of making American shipbuilding great again.”
General Dynamics also announced a $2.5 billion investment in Rhode Industries to support U.S. Navy submarine programs. This project is expected to create approximately 1,500 new jobs in Pennsylvania. Company President Danny Deep noted that this investment will strengthen the state’s supply chain and accelerate the production of Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarines.
In his address, President Trump criticized the rising costs of naval programs and previous engineering strategies, insisting that future warships should prioritize reliability and rapid production over unnecessary complexity.
“We have the best quality in the world, but we need a bit more speed,” Trump emphasized, while also stressing the need to accelerate the production of submarines, missiles, and other military systems.
This shipbuilding initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to rebuild the American defense industrial base through increased manufacturing, public-private investment, and close collaboration with defense companies.
Officials at the summit stated that modernizing shipyards and enhancing naval production capacity will be essential to meet future military needs and maintain America’s maritime advantages.
