Beijing, April 14: China has labeled the United States’ alleged blockade of Iranian ports as “dangerous and irresponsible.” During a press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that this action by the US will escalate tensions and confrontations in the region.
He emphasized that the US has intensified military activities to enforce a targeted blockade, which could adversely affect the already fragile ceasefire agreements in place.
China also warned that this move jeopardizes the safety of vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
When questioned about former President Trump’s statements regarding additional tariffs, Guo responded that if the US persists in imposing extra tariffs under the guise of “military product exports,” China will take strong retaliatory measures.
Regarding reports of the US military planning to establish a new fuel depot in Davao, Philippines, Guo remarked that in a world currently facing turmoil and change, unilateral decisions and military bullying could lead to global trouble. He stressed that the current state of development and stability in the Asia-Pacific region has not been easily achieved and must not be disrupted at any cost.
The situation in West Asia has raised concerns globally amid the US’s alleged blockade of Hormuz. Trump has claimed he will block all ships passing through this route. According to the US Central Command, the USS Tripoli (LHA-7) is involved in this operation, with F-35B Lightning II stealth fighter jets, MV-22 Osprey aircraft, and helicopters being continuously dispatched toward Hormuz. CENTCOM has indicated that more fighter jets can be deployed on the USS Tripoli.
In light of these developments, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday. They discussed a four-point peace proposal and emphasized the need for a shared, comprehensive, and sustainable security framework for the Middle East and Gulf region.
During a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Xi criticized the increasing US interference, stating that “the law of the jungle” is returning to the world, and called for enhanced cooperation against it. Sánchez is also on an official visit to China.
