Child Labor Completely Banned in Dangerous Industries in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, March 27: Child labor has been completely banned in dangerous industries across Madhya Pradesh. Strict actions, including financial penalties and imprisonment, will be enforced against violations.

Assistant Labor Commissioner Rakhi Joshi announced that the employment of children aged 14 to 18 in hazardous industries and processes is now entirely prohibited. Under the labor star rating system, any institution found employing child or bonded labor will receive zero points under the zero-tolerance policy.

All labor officials in Madhya Pradesh have been issued necessary directives regarding this matter. Institutions that do not employ child or bonded labor will be encouraged to achieve labor star ratings, even if they have some deficiencies in other criteria. The labor department is continuously working under the “Veda Initiative” to eliminate child labor.

Regular review meetings are held every Friday, and prosecution cases are closely monitored. Additionally, complaints received on the child helpline number 1098 (toll-free) are continuously tracked. According to information from the Assistant Labor Commissioner’s office in Indore, legal provisions under the Child Labor (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, stipulate fines ranging from ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 and imprisonment for six months to two years for those found guilty.

Under the Bonded Labor System (Abolition) Act, 1976, offenders may face up to three years of imprisonment or fines of up to ₹2,000. For the rehabilitation of bonded laborers, the central government’s 2021 scheme provides assistance of up to ₹1 lakh for adult male workers, ₹2 lakh for female workers and orphaned children, and up to ₹3 lakh for victims of physical exploitation or human trafficking. Additionally, a corpus fund has been established in each district for rehabilitation purposes.
