Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Avoids Comment on Oppositions No-Confidence Motion

New Delhi, March 15: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, committed to conducting fair and unbiased assembly elections, refrained from discussing the opposition’s alleged attempts to initiate his removal from office during a recent address.

When questioned about accusations of bias against the Election Commission of India (ECI) from political parties, the CEC stated, “The Commission does not wish to engage in such discussions.”

While announcing the election schedule for four states and one Union Territory (UT), the CEC detailed the measures taken by the election body to ensure independent, fair, and transparent assembly elections. He emphasized that elections in India are conducted in accordance with the Constitution and the law, asserting that political violence or inducements will not be tolerated.

His remarks followed attacks on the ECI by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and protests against the Special Intensive Review (SIR) in Esplanade, Kolkata, which began on February 6. Earlier, Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Roy confirmed that notices had been submitted in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, actions taken in compliance with the law to initiate the process for the CEC’s removal.

He further stated that the next step would involve forming a committee to investigate the matter.

Speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex, Roy mentioned that the process to initiate action against the CEC adheres to constitutional provisions and established legal procedures.

The TMC MP remarked, “The committee will be formed according to the law. What do we expect? Our notice is in accordance with the law, and a committee should be formed. The main allegation is that he has deprived people of their voting rights and removed many names from the voter list. This is completely wrong. Additionally, several booth-level officials have lost their lives.”

On Sunday, the CEC announced that voting in Assam and Kerala will take place in a single phase on April 9. Elections will also be held on the same day in the Union Territory of Puducherry. In Tamil Nadu, elections for all 234 assembly seats will occur in a single phase on April 23. For the 294-member West Bengal assembly, voting will be conducted in two phases: 152 assembly seats on April 23 and the remaining 142 seats on April 29. The election results will be declared on May 4.
