New Delhi, April 15: In a significant move towards legal equality and women’s empowerment, the Chhattisgarh Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, convened on Wednesday to make crucial decisions.
The Cabinet has initiated the process to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and has also announced a 50% reduction in property registration fees for women, aiming to bolster their economic strength.
To draft the UCC, the state government has formed a high-level committee headed by retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. This committee will gather suggestions from citizens, experts, and various organizations to create a comprehensive draft, which will later be presented to the assembly through the legal process.
The primary goal of this initiative is to establish a uniform and simplified legal framework that addresses the complexities arising from different laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and family matters across various religions. The government believes this will enhance the transparency and accessibility of the justice system while ensuring equal rights for women.
Experts suggest that in a diverse state like Chhattisgarh, where tribal, rural, and urban societies are evolving together, a Uniform Civil Code could reduce legal confusion and strengthen social balance. This initiative is also considered significant at the national level, as the UCC has been a topic of debate in the country for a long time.
In another major decision benefiting women, the Cabinet has announced a 50% reduction in property registration fees for women. This move is expected to make purchasing land and homes more accessible and affordable for women. Additionally, it is anticipated that there will be an increase in the trend of registering property in women’s names, thereby enhancing their economic independence and social security.
According to the state government, this decision will impact approximately ₹153 crore in revenue. However, it is viewed as a long-term social investment in women’s empowerment. Experts believe this initiative could particularly prove effective in increasing women’s participation in property ownership in rural and semi-urban areas.
