Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Calls for Action Plan for Godavari Water Utilization

Amaravati, April 15: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to develop a comprehensive action plan for the effective utilization of Godavari water following the completion of the Polavaram project.

During a review meeting with the Water Resources Department officials on Wednesday, the Chief Minister emphasized the need to efficiently channel water through the right and left main canals to reservoirs and ponds to meet irrigation and other requirements.

He reviewed the progress of several projects, including the Polavaram project, Veligonda, Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi, Polavaram-Nallamala Sagar link, Chintalapudi Lift Irrigation Scheme, Varikapudiselu, and North Andhra projects. The ongoing Jaladhara and Jalaharathi programs aimed at enhancing groundwater were also assessed.

The Chief Minister instructed to expedite the North Andhra projects, including Tharakrama, Mahendratanya, Thotapalli Barrage, Maddulavalasa, Janjavati, and Hiramanthalam lift schemes. He set deadlines for river-linking projects, targeting completion of the Vansadhara-Nagavali link by December and the Nagavali-Champavati link by July.

He noted that obstacles for the proposed Neradi Barrage on the Vansadhara River in Srikakulam district have been cleared and urged for the tender to be issued promptly.

Additionally, the Chief Minister proposed to develop the Polavaram project as a major tourist destination, which would include hotels, shopping areas, beautification, and boating facilities from Polavaram to Papikondalu and Bhadrachalam. Water, rock, forest, and sports-based attractions will also be developed.

He instructed officials to ensure the inauguration of this project by the time of Godavari Pushkaram. The target for completing the first phase of the Veligonda project is set for the end of June, with an estimated cost of ₹2,042 crores.

Officials reported that 52 TMC of water from the Srisailam backwaters has already been delivered to the Rayalaseema region via the Mallaya lift. The Chief Minister stated that due to the state government’s efforts, groundwater availability reached 625 TMC by April 1, which is 12 TMC more than last year.

He added that there has been an average improvement of 0.79 meters in groundwater levels across the state, with groundwater available within 8 meters in 5,697 villages.

The meeting was attended by Water Resources Minister Nimmaka Ramanaidu, Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad, and other senior officials.
