New Delhi, May 17: Chelsea FC has officially appointed Xabi Alonso as their new head coach. His four-year term will commence on July 1, 2026. The club made this announcement through a statement on social media.
The club expressed, “Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the manager of the men’s team. The former Spanish player will take charge on July 1, 2026. His contract is for four years. Welcome to Chelsea, Xabi.”
In his first response as Chelsea’s manager, Alonso stated, “Chelsea is one of the biggest football clubs in the world. It is a great honor for me to become the manager of this prestigious club. My discussions with the owners and sporting leadership have made it clear that our thoughts and goals align. We aim to build a team that can compete at the highest level and fight for trophies. There is immense talent in the team, and there is significant potential for growth in this football club. It will be a privilege to lead it. Our focus now is on hard work, creating the right environment, and winning trophies.”
This appointment signals Chelsea’s latest effort to bring stability amid a tumultuous management period, which has seen numerous changes in the dugout this season. Alonso joins Chelsea after leaving Real Madrid by mutual consent earlier this year. His time at Real Madrid was brief but challenging.
Alonso’s appointment comes less than 24 hours after Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester City FC in the FA Cup final. Having led Bayer 04 Leverkusen to a Bundesliga title in 2024, Alonso arrives at Chelsea with an increasing reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young managers. During his three-year tenure in Germany, he secured the club’s first league title and the German Cup.
As a player, Xabi Alonso had an illustrious career, representing Spain in 114 matches. He was part of the Spanish team that won the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and the European Championships in 2008 and 2012. In club football, he has played for Liverpool FC, Real Sociedad, Real Madrid, and FC Bayern Munich.
