ICC Imposes Fine on Yashasvi and Asitha for On-Field Altercation

New Delhi, August 24: The second Test match between India and Sri Lanka is currently taking place at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. On the first day of the Test, a heated exchange occurred between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando. Both players have now been fined by the ICC.

The ICC has imposed a 25% fine on the match fees of both Yashasvi and Asitha. Additionally, each player has received one demerit point. They were found guilty under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to “inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee, or any other person (including spectators during an international match).”

The incident unfolded after Yashasvi was dismissed on the first day of the Test. Asitha celebrated aggressively, making comments towards Yashasvi. In response, as Yashasvi was heading back to the pavilion, he turned towards Asitha and struck him with his helmet. The situation escalated, prompting Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva to intervene.

Following the day’s play, Yashasvi’s behavior faced significant criticism. India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, acknowledged that Yashasvi should not have approached Asitha so closely. However, he noted that such altercations can often occur in the heat of the moment. Yashasvi failed to capitalize on a good start in the first innings of the second Test, scoring only 45 runs before being clean bowled by Asitha Fernando. His performance in the first Test was also underwhelming, with scores of 32 in the first innings and a duck in the second. By the end of the second day’s tea break, India had lost 8 wickets and scored 475 runs, with Dhruv Jurel remaining at the crease with 95 runs.
