Amsterdam, August 24: In a disappointing turn of events, the Indian men’s hockey team saw their championship dreams dashed on Monday at the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026. They faced a 3-5 defeat against Argentina at the Wagner Hockey Stadium in Amsterdam during the ‘Pool E’ match.
Against Argentina, India needed better movement in the final third, more accuracy in front of goal, and a more aggressive approach to capitalize on their chances. The challenge was immense, and India had no choice but to give their all to keep their World Cup hopes alive. However, they failed to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them, while Argentina played to their strengths, limiting India’s chances.
The match began with an early goal from Joaquin Toscani in the first minute, followed by Nicolas Della Torre doubling Argentina’s lead in the sixth minute. India managed to score in the tenth minute through Sukjeet Singh, ending the first half with Argentina leading 2-1.
The second half saw no goals until the third quarter, where Argentina scored twice. Tomas Domene extended their lead to 3-1 in the 33rd minute, and just before the end of the third quarter, he netted another goal, bringing the score to 4-1.
In the 53rd minute, Lucas Toscani scored again for Argentina. India fought back with goals from Sukjeet Singh in the 58th minute and Hardik Singh in the 60th minute, but it was not enough to change the outcome.
Notably, India had entered ‘Pool E’ after finishing second in ‘Pool D’ with two wins out of three matches. They had defeated Wales 3-1 but lost to England 2-4 before overcoming Pakistan 5-3 in their last match.
Unfortunately, India could not secure a single victory in ‘Pool E’. Following a 1-3 loss to the Netherlands, their hopes of reaching the semifinals depended on defeating Argentina by a four-goal margin and favorable results from other matches. However, they ended up losing by two goals in their second match, failing to earn any points in the tournament’s second phase.
Argentina, the gold medalists from the 2016 Olympic Games, began their second phase with a 3-1 victory over England. With this win, they now share the top spot with the Netherlands, both teams having six points. A match between England and the Netherlands will take place on Monday to determine the top two teams in the pool that will advance to the semifinals.
