Colombo, August 24: India declared their first innings at 503/9 against Sri Lanka in the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club on Monday. Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel both scored centuries in a commanding performance.
Winning the toss on Sunday, the Indian team opted to bat first but lost KL Rahul early for 18 runs off 33 balls, leaving the score at 37. Padikkal then took charge, forming a partnership of 29 runs with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 45 runs from 53 balls with nine boundaries before being dismissed.
Padikkal continued to build the innings, adding 120 runs for the third wicket with captain Shubman Gill, who made 50 runs with six fours. Rishabh Pant came in at number five but faced only 15 balls before retiring hurt due to a wrist injury from a delivery by Lahiru Kumara. He managed just 3 runs at that point.
Ravindra Jadeja replaced Pant and contributed 43 runs to the team total. By the end of the first day, India had faced 85 overs, scoring 300 runs while losing five wickets, with Padikkal scoring 117 runs, including 12 fours.
On the second day, Pant returned to bat and added 112 runs with Dhruv Jurel before getting out on the first ball of the second session, scoring 63 runs, which included two sixes and four fours.
India lost Manav Suthar for 18 runs in the 125th over. By the time they reached 475 runs, they had lost 8 wickets in 131.2 overs, but rain interrupted play.
When the game resumed, Mohammed Siraj fell for 3 runs on the first ball of the 137th over, after a 31-run partnership with Jurel. Shortly after, India declared their innings. Jurel remained unbeaten with 115 runs, hitting two sixes and nine fours, while Prasidh Krishna added 4 runs off 7 balls. For the hosts, Asitha Fernando took the most wickets with 4, while Prabath Jayasuriya and Keshara Senanayake claimed 2 wickets each, and Lahiru Kumara took 1 wicket.
In response, Sri Lanka sent Lahiru Udara and Kamil Mishara to bat, but play was halted again due to rain after Udara faced just two deliveries from Siraj.
