Central Minister Shantanu Thakur Criticizes TMC Amid SIR Controversy in West Bengal

Kolkata, February 27: The ongoing controversy surrounding the SIR (State Identification Register) in West Bengal has sparked statements from Central Minister Shantanu Thakur and BJP leader Dilip Ghosh.

Minister Thakur questioned whether the Election Commission would intentionally disregard legitimate votes. He emphasized that names of individuals listed twice or those deceased would be removed from the voter list.

Thakur noted a palpable fear within the ruling party regarding the SIR. He stated that officials are so consumed by this issue that they perceive negativity in every situation, whether awake or asleep. This fear has led them to speak anxiously about the SIR. He remarked that everyone, from the Chief Minister to MPs and MLAs, seems to be apprehensive.

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh commented on the SIR issue, stating that while SIR has been implemented nationwide, the West Bengal government is obstructing its progress. He claimed that the courts are aware of the government’s intentions and that the Election Commission is also monitoring the situation. Thus, announcing the list on time poses a significant challenge.

Ghosh also mentioned an upcoming transformation rally, which will feature senior leaders including Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh. This six to seven-day event will see participation from many in public gatherings. He accused the state government of plotting to destabilize Bengal, citing incidents of children being abducted and widespread fear of bomb threats. He asserted that there is a conspiracy to intimidate voters during the elections, and it is the state’s responsibility to ensure public safety.
