Mumbai, May 31: In a tragic incident in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area of Maharashtra, over 11 people have died after consuming toxic liquor. This event has sparked widespread fear and anger in the community. Central Minister Ramdas Athawale condemned the incident.
Athawale stated that no one knows where illegal country-made liquor is produced, what chemicals are mixed in it, or how it is prepared. Such incidents have occurred multiple times across the country, claiming hundreds of lives. In this case, 11 deaths have been reported in Pune’s five areas, including Fughewadi and Dapodi, raising the total number of fatalities to 16. He emphasized that all illegal liquor dens should be completely shut down and mentioned that he would discuss this incident with the Chief Minister. “Sixteen deaths mean sixteen families have been devastated,” he added.
According to the central government’s regulations, a compensation of ₹2 lakh is provided for accidental death cases, and Athawale expressed his intention to pursue this matter. However, he stressed that such incidents should never occur.
Local residents reported that several individuals fell ill suddenly after drinking, leading to a series of deaths.
In a swift response, police arrested four suspects identified as Yogesh Wankhede, Radheshyam Prajapati, Mirka Singh, and Guru Mangal Singh. They were presented in Pimpri Court, where they were remanded to police custody until June 8. Authorities are currently investigating the source of the toxic liquor and identifying all those involved.
A family member of one of the deceased shared, “Their relative Baba Sheikh and his friend Akbar Pathan often drank together. The family had no idea that their condition could become so serious. When Baba Sheikh fell ill, they thought it was just a common ailment. However, upon reaching the hospital, it was revealed that he had consumed a large quantity of liquor, and nearly a liter was extracted from his stomach. Initially, doctors suggested other causes, leaving the family even more confused. Gradually, the situation worsened, and Baba Sheikh passed away.”
