Hyderabad, August 29: Telangana has reported a 7.15% increase in its overall crime rate over the past three years (2023-24 to 2025-26). Notably, drug-related cases have surged by 46.10%.
These statistics were revealed during a semi-annual crime review meeting led by the state’s Director General of Police (DGP), C.V. Anand, with senior police officials from various units.
According to the data, the total number of crime cases in the state rose from 265,377 in 2023-24 to 284,363 in 2025-26. The crime rate per one lakh population increased from 481.58 to 491.59.
The number of drug-related cases jumped from 2,026 to 2,960, marking a 46.10% rise. Organized crime cases also saw a dramatic increase, soaring from 25 to 451, reflecting a staggering 1,704% rise. Traffic offenses rose from 29,130 to 31,891, a 9.48% increase.
However, some categories of crime witnessed a decline. Cybercrime cases decreased from 25,373 to 22,000, a reduction of 13.29%. Economic crimes fell from 37,690 to 32,684, showing a 13.28% decrease.
The DGP’s office noted a significant drop in serious crimes. In 2024-25, there were 7,019 serious crime cases, which decreased to 6,294 in 2025-26, representing a 10.33% decline. The serious crime rate per one lakh population also fell from 11.21 to 10.88.
In major police jurisdictions, serious crimes in Hyderabad decreased from 1,483 to 1,094, a 26.23% reduction. In Cyberabad, cases fell from 656 to 613, while in Malkajgiri, they dropped from 664 to 549.
Despite the reduction in serious crimes, non-serious offenses have continued to rise. Their numbers increased from 259,201 in 2023-24 to 278,069 in 2025-26, a 7.28% rise. In Future City, there was a 23.70% increase, in Cyberabad a 17.32% increase, and in Malkajgiri a 13.53% increase. However, Hyderabad reported a 2.77% decrease in non-serious crimes.
Districts like Komaram Bheem Asifabad and Adilabad recorded increases of 70.88% and 60.71%, respectively. Other districts such as Medak, Sangareddy, Nalgonda, and Narayanpet also saw a rise in such crimes.
The increase in narcotics cases is viewed as a significant challenge for the police department, with the crime rate per one lakh population rising from 3.68 to 5.12. In Cyberabad, cases surged from 266 to 508, a 90.98% increase, while Warangal recorded a 142.31% rise over the three years.
DGP C.V. Anand urged officials to adhere strictly to professional standards in crime investigation and policing. He emphasized that crime reviews should not be limited to statistics but should include a thorough analysis of the causes of crimes, the methods used by criminals, the quality of investigations, and case resolutions.
He noted that recent years have seen a special focus on the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems, resulting in an increase in data update rates from 70-80% to 96%.
The DGP instructed officials to take immediate action on issues identified during district tours and police station inspections and to proactively prepare action plans for emerging crime trends.
