Mumbai, July 28: Renowned actress Rekha has been invited to receive an honor at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2026 for her unique contributions to Indian cinema. In addition, her classic film ‘Umrao Jaan’ will be showcased during the festival.
This screening aims to pay tribute to the legendary singer Asha Bhosle. Rekha expressed that the character she portrayed in the film continues to live on in her memories and silence.
Rekha stated, “Umrao Jaan has never left me. She lives on in my memories, my silences, and in the hearts of those who have given her so much love and affection over the years. To revisit that journey and see the film celebrated on a global platform is humbling and touching.”
The actress further added, “Cinema is the greatest blessing of my life, and being honored with the ‘Excellence in Cinema Award’ at IFFM 2026 is special. I accept this honor wholeheartedly, not just as recognition of my journey, but as a tribute to the filmmakers, writers, musicians, and countless collaborators who have enriched my life and shaped my work.”
As part of the festival’s special Independence Day tradition, Rekha will hoist the Indian National Flag in Melbourne on August 15. This event coincides with India’s 79th Independence Day and will be attended by members of the Indian diaspora, prominent Australians, filmmakers, artists, and cinema lovers.
The annual flag-hosting ceremony has previously been led by some of Indian cinema’s most famous personalities, including the late Rishi Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Shabana Azmi, Anil Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Ram Charan, and filmmaker Karan Johar.
Meetu Bhawmik Lange, founder and festival director of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, remarked, “Rekha Ji is a timeless icon whose work, grace, and unparalleled legacy built over decades have inspired audiences not only in India but around the world. It is a great honor to welcome her as our Guest of Honor this year at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.”
She added, “Her contribution to Indian cinema is immense, and her influence continues to inspire actors, filmmakers, and audiences across generations.”
