Barsana, February 24: The vibrant festival of Holi, one of India’s largest celebrations, is just around the corner. On March 4, the country will joyfully celebrate the festival of colors. However, Holi festivities begin earlier in many places, with Barsana’s Holi being renowned for its unique traditions.
At the Shri Ladli Ji Maharaj Temple in Barsana, the famous Laddoo Mar and Lathmar Holi celebrations take place. This ancient temple, located in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, is dedicated to Goddess Radha. The temple primarily worships Radha Rani (Ladli Ji) and Lord Krishna (Lal Ji) together, which is why it is known as Shri Ladli Ji Maharaj Temple, meaning the beloved daughter and son of the town.
The temple is situated atop the prominent Bhanu Gadh (Brahmanchal) hill, also referred to as the ‘Shri Ji Temple’ or ‘Radha Rani Temple.’ It is often called ‘Barsana Ka Matha,’ standing at approximately 250 meters high. The temple is famous for its vibrant festivals, including Radhashtami, Janmashtami, Laddoo Mar, and Lathmar Holi.
During special occasions, the temple is adorned with flowers, and a grand aarti is performed with ‘Chhappan Bhog’ offered to Radha and Krishna. This attracts a large number of devotees and tourists from across the country and beyond, enhancing the temple’s beauty manifold.
According to tradition, the Radha Rani Temple was established around 5,000 years ago by King Vajranabh, a descendant of Lord Krishna. The atmosphere of the temple is always filled with the chanting of ‘Radha-Radha,’ and devotees must climb approximately 108 steps to reach it.
In Barsana’s Laddoo Mar Holi, priests and devotees throw laddoos into the air, which people catch as prasad. Meanwhile, during Lathmar Holi, women from Barsana strike men from Nandgaon with sticks, while the men try to shield themselves. This tradition is inspired by the playful love stories of Krishna and Radha. Legend has it that Krishna would come to Barsana to color Radha and her friends, who would chase him away with sticks. This tradition continues to be celebrated with great enthusiasm in Barsana, making it famous worldwide.
