Mumbai, August 6: Renowned filmmaker Subhash Ghai marked the 33rd anniversary of his iconic film ‘Khalnayak’ on Thursday, reminiscing about the memories associated with its release. On this special occasion, he shared how the concept for the film came to be, emphasizing his desire to portray a villain whose story is rooted in pain and tragedy.
Ghai explained that the core idea of the film revolves around how a person can transform by listening to their inner voice, turning from evil to good.
Discussing the film, he stated, “When I began writing the story of ‘Khalnayak,’ the first thought that struck me was whether a character like Ravana could listen to his soul’s voice and move towards becoming Ram. This theme captivated me the most and gave birth to the entire narrative. It wasn’t just a villain’s tale; it was a tragedy of a person who ends up in the world of crime due to circumstances.”
The director reflected on the experience of creating the film with stars like Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, and Madhuri Dixit, stating, “The experience of making this film 33 years ago is still fresh in my mind. Times have changed, but the story, characters, and message of the film remain alive in people’s hearts.”
Ghai credited the film’s success to the entire team, expressing heartfelt gratitude to composer Laxmikant-Pyarelal, lyricist Anand Bakshi, cinematographer Ashok Mehta, renowned choreographer Saroj Khan, costume designer Neeta Lulla, writer Kamlesh Pandey, and all the technical members involved.
He remarked, “Each of them played a crucial role in making the film memorable, and without their hard work, ‘Khalnayak’ would not have achieved such monumental success.”
Released in 1993, ‘Khalnayak’ is considered one of Bollywood’s most talked-about films. Sanjay Dutt portrayed the character Ballu Balram, also known as ‘Khalnayak,’ while Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit played significant roles. The film was a box office hit.
The music of the film remains one of its greatest strengths, with songs like “Nayak Nahin Khalnayak Hoon Main,” “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai,” “Palki Mein Hoke Sawar Chali Re,” and “Ae Sahab Ye Theek Nahin” still resonating with audiences today.
