Mumbai, August 6: Suresh Wadkar, renowned for his melodious voice in the world of music, has made a significant mark in Indian singing. His songs continue to resonate with fans even today. However, a story from his personal life has also captured public attention over the years. It was rumored that a relationship was proposed between Wadkar and Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, but it never progressed. Recently, Wadkar addressed this long-standing rumor, providing a different perspective.
Born on August 7, 1955, in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, Suresh Wadkar’s father, Ishwar Wadkar, worked in a mill but had a deep passion for music. Listening to his father’s devotional songs sparked Wadkar’s interest in music from a young age. His father dreamed of him becoming a great singer, which led Wadkar to start learning music early in his life.
Wadkar began his formal music education at a young age, studying classical music under the guidance of Guru Pandit Jialal Vasant. His mentor played a crucial role in shaping his unique vocal identity.
In 1976, Wadkar participated in the ‘Sur-Singar’ music competition, where his voice caught the attention of the judges. Renowned composers like Ravindra Jain and Jaydev were impressed by his talent. This led to Wadkar receiving his first break in the film industry, singing for Rajshri Productions’ film ‘Paheli.’ He also lent his voice to the famous ghazal “Seene Mein Jalan, Aankhon Mein Toofan Sa Kyun Hai” for the film ‘Gaman,’ which established his presence in the industry.
From that point on, Wadkar never looked back. In 1981, he collaborated with legendary composer Lata Mangeshkar in the film ‘Krodhi.’ His songs from ‘Pyaasa Sawan,’ ‘Prem Rog,’ and ‘Sadma’ became household favorites, further solidifying his status as a prominent playback singer.
His voice was particularly favored in films featuring Rishi Kapoor, and he contributed to many films of the Kapoor family, including ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili,’ ‘Hina,’ and ‘Prem Granth.’ Wadkar has worked with several prominent composers, including Gulzar, R.D. Burman, A.R. Rahman, and Vishal Bhardwaj.
The story involving Madhuri Dixit has been a topic of discussion for a long time. Various media reports claimed that Wadkar was considered for a relationship with Dixit, but her family reportedly disapproved, citing his ‘thin’ physique. However, in a recent interview, Wadkar clarified that this narrative is not entirely accurate, stating that he never had such a relationship proposal. He expressed his respect for Madhuri, referring to her as a good friend.
Wadkar’s contributions extend beyond films; he has also enchanted audiences with devotional music and songs in various languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bhojpuri, and Konkani. In later years, he ventured into music education, mentoring new talents through the Aajivasan Music Academy.
For his contributions to music, Wadkar has received numerous prestigious awards, including the National Film Award for the Marathi film ‘Mee Sindhutai Sapkal’ in 2011. He has also been honored with the Lata Mangeshkar Award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2020.
