New Delhi, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : During a recent visit to Ghana, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with his counterpart, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Following their discussions, Jaishankar highlighted the historical partnership between India and Ghana, noting that both nations have long been voices for the Global South. He emphasized that the challenges and initiatives faced by both countries are similar, paving the way for enhanced cooperation in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, digital technology, and defense.
Expressing his enthusiasm for his inaugural visit to Ghana, Jaishankar stated that the primary goal was to advance the bilateral relationship established during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic trip to Ghana last year. He remarked that having established a comprehensive partnership, it is now essential to explore new areas of collaboration and strengthen existing ties.
Jaishankar pointed out that Ghana has been a longstanding partner for India. Before the term “Global South” became common, both countries had already been advocates for the freedom and self-reliance of nations that had previously been colonized. He believes that their shared heritage continues to provide a solid foundation for their relationship.
The discussions focused on elevating bilateral relations to new heights. Jaishankar noted that several initiatives in Ghana mirror those in India, reflecting the similar challenges faced by developing nations. For instance, Ghana’s health program, the Accra Reset, aligns with India’s Ayushman Bharat initiative. Similarly, Ghana’s Feed Ghana program, which emphasizes food security, resonates with India’s efforts to promote farmer welfare and coarse cereals.
Ghana’s goal of training one million coders parallels India’s Digital India and Startup India initiatives. Both countries are also working to expedite infrastructure projects. Jaishankar expressed optimism that sharing experiences as Global South nations could lead to mutual assistance.
During the visit, two agreements were signed focusing on agricultural research, training, and biodiversity. Additionally, cooperation in pharmaceuticals, health, mining, railways, and the digital sector is set to expand.
Jaishankar also noted the active presence of Indian companies in Ghana and the longstanding Indian community there, which acts as a bridge between the two nations. Recent months have seen significant investments in the pharmaceutical, medical, poultry, and renewable energy sectors.
He believes that the partnership between India and Ghana will bolster both nations in facing challenges, promote inclusive development, and ensure that economic progress benefits the wider population. Given the current global turmoil, this partnership is increasingly vital.
Another key aspect of their relationship is linked to the African continent. India values Ghana’s historical role in the African Union, especially as Ghana is set to assume the presidency next year. Jaishankar underscored the importance of Ghana’s participation in organizations like ECOWAS, which India has maintained deep ties with over the years.
As members of the Commonwealth, both countries are preparing to engage in upcoming meetings, where they will collaborate on various issues of mutual interest.
Reflecting on the current global landscape, Jaishankar noted a shift towards a multipolar world that embraces diversity. Both India and Ghana have navigated challenging periods in their histories, and he stressed the importance of being independent thinkers and supporting strategic autonomy.
He concluded by expressing eagerness to further discussions and hopes for an opportunity to welcome his Ghanaian counterparts to India soon.
