CBIs Strong Action Against Corruption: SBI Loan Officer Caught Accepting Bribe

New Delhi, March 13: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has achieved a significant success. The agency arrested an Assistant Manager/Loan Officer from the Gumi branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) in Kamrup (Rural) district of Assam while he was accepting a bribe.

This case was registered on March 12, 2026, leading to the officer’s arrest. According to the CBI, the accused demanded a bribe of ₹16,000 from the complainant in exchange for processing loan applications under the Rooftop Solar Electrification Scheme.

These solar energy loans are intended to promote clean energy in rural areas under government initiatives. However, the officer attempted to misuse this for personal gain.

Following the complaint, the CBI set up a vigilance trap. The accused requested and accepted the ₹16,000 from the complainant, during which he was caught red-handed. After the arrest, searches were conducted at the accused’s premises, where relevant documents and other evidence were seized.

The CBI presented the accused in a special CBI court in Guwahati, where he will be sent for remand or judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing, and further evidence is being collected. This case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, which criminalizes both soliciting and accepting bribes.

This incident raises questions about the role of bank officials in the implementation of government schemes. The Rooftop Solar Scheme is an ambitious initiative by the central government, providing affordable electricity and subsidies to rural families. However, such cases could undermine the credibility of the scheme. The CBI has uncovered several bribery and fraud cases in the banking sector in recent years, with many bank officials in Assam being implicated.
