Mumbai, June 20: A serious case of suspected food poisoning has emerged in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra, affecting over 80 individuals from various families.
The victims are experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and headaches. Initially, 11 people were admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital a day earlier, but this number has now escalated to 80.
Upon receiving reports of the incident, senior police inspector from Shanti Nagar police station arrived at IGM Hospital with a team to record statements from the affected individuals.
Dr. Madhuri Panhare, Chief Medical Officer at IGM Hospital, stated that all patients have been examined and are currently out of danger. She mentioned, “We have 80 patients admitted at the moment. They are all showing symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Among them are eight children. All patients reported consuming food items from a local food shop in Bhiwandi one or two days prior. They exhibit similar symptoms, with some experiencing fever. However, none are in critical condition, and appropriate treatment is ongoing. Samples from some patients have been sent for testing.”
Reports indicate that approximately 34 to 59 individuals fell ill after consuming chicken shawarma, pizza, and falooda from a popular fast-food outlet in the Khandu Pada area of Bhiwandi on June 18-19. The situation escalated from an initial 11-14 patients admitted to the hospital, eventually rising to 80.
