Kolkata, July 30: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has changed the investigation officer in the horrific rape and murder case of a female junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The previous officer, Seema Pahuja, faced allegations of negligence from the victim’s parents, who demanded her removal. She has now been relieved of her duties in this case.
Sandeepani Garg has been appointed as the new officer and was present at the trial court hearing in central Kolkata’s Sealdah on Thursday.
On the same day, the CBI submitted a status report detailing the progress of the investigation. Garg also spoke with the victim’s mother, who was present in court, urging her to trust the agency’s ongoing inquiry.
The CBI lawyer informed the court that under the new investigation, they are reviewing 1,000 pages of documents. Statements from the victim’s father and mother have already been recorded.
The body of the junior doctor was discovered on the morning of August 8, 2024, in a seminar room within the RG Kar premises. She had been brutally raped and murdered the previous night.
Following the incident, Kolkata police arrested a civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy. Subsequently, the Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to take over the investigation. However, the agency has not arrested anyone else suspected of involvement in the case.
Ultimately, the trial court convicted the sole accused, Sanjay Roy, sentencing him to life imprisonment. Nevertheless, the victim’s parents expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation, claiming that more individuals were involved.
Earlier this year, the Calcutta High Court ordered a fresh inquiry into the case.
