New Delhi, August 1: Amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday. During the conversation, Jaishankar expressed India’s deep concerns regarding the escalating conflict in the region.
Jaishankar took to the social media platform ‘X’ to share, “I spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi this evening. I conveyed our serious concerns about the ongoing conflict in the region. We emphasized that attacks on commercial vessels and seafarers must not occur under any circumstances. India strongly condemns any such attacks, regardless of the party responsible.”
He added that during their discussion, he was informed about the current developments and ongoing dialogues from Iran’s perspective. India has always supported dialogue and diplomacy.
Earlier in the day, the U.S. military shared new information related to its operations against Iran. They stated that they have altered the course of several commercial vessels while maintaining extensive surveillance and naval presence in the Middle East.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported, “As of July 30, CENTCOM forces have redirected 24 commercial vessels, neutralized two ships, and conducted inspections on two others to ensure full compliance with regulations.”
On Wednesday, the U.S. launched new military strikes against Iran. According to U.S. officials, this action was a response to an alleged attempt by Iran to attack American forces in the Middle East, further escalating months of rising tensions.
These strikes occurred a day after Iran fired ballistic missiles targeting U.S. military bases in Jordan. U.S. officials stated that their air defense systems successfully thwarted this attack.
President Donald Trump had previously warned of a strong response, stating that if an attack was attempted, the U.S. would take “very severe” action against Iran.
Currently, CENTCOM has not provided detailed information regarding the locations or extent of the new attacks within Iran.
However, reports from Iranian state media indicate that explosions were heard in several southern provinces, including Hormozgan and Khuzestan. Some attacks also targeted oil-related structures and occurred near certain islands in the Persian Gulf.
