CBI Arrests Recruiter Linked to Cambodian Cyber Fraud Syndicate

New Delhi, March 15: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an individual accused of recruiting Indian youth for foreign cyber fraud syndicates. According to the investigative agency, this suspect lured Indian citizens with promises of attractive job offers abroad, only to force them into cyber crimes.

In a press release, the CBI identified the accused as Krishna Kumar Lakhwani, a resident of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The agency received information about organized cyber crime syndicates operating large-scale scams from foreign locations, including a significant base in Cambodia, where Indian youths are ensnared into online fraud.

The investigation revealed that the accused would entice young individuals with offers of well-paying jobs in data entry, customer support, or other IT-related fields. Candidates were charged approximately $300 to $400 and were sent to Cambodia via various routes through Delhi. Upon arrival, these youths were coerced into working for cyber fraud gangs. The CBI reported that individuals taken to these scam compounds abroad were subjected to threats, intimidation, and illegal confinement. They were forced to engage in digital arrest scams, identity theft, and other online frauds, often referred to as “cyber slaves.”

Based on intelligence, the CBI monitored the suspect and tracked him upon his return to India. He was taken into custody for questioning, during which investigators examined his mobile phone and discovered several videos. These videos showed him conducting interviews with candidates allegedly being recruited for these scam compounds. Additionally, images of several Indian candidates’ passports were recovered, indicating they had been sent to these centers in Cambodia.

Preliminary investigations also indicated that the accused was part of a larger criminal syndicate that sent Indian citizens abroad under the guise of fake job offers. Once overseas, they were illegally detained and integrated into cyber fraud networks targeting individuals in India and other countries.

The CBI has arrested Krishna Kumar Lakhwani and is conducting a thorough investigation to connect all aspects of the network.
