New Delhi, September 2: India and Ethiopia engaged in discussions on Wednesday to enhance their defense cooperation. The talks focused on various aspects, including defense training, collaboration in the defense industry, and opportunities for joint participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
The meeting took place between Nebiyu Tedla, the Charge d’Affaires at the Ethiopian Embassy in New Delhi, and Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Defense.
The Ministry of Defense shared on social media platform X that both parties explored ways to strengthen India-Ethiopia defense ties, particularly in emerging areas such as training and defense industry collaboration.
Earlier in June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and his Prosperity Party on their decisive victory in parliamentary elections.
Prime Minister Modi expressed on X that India values its historical, multifaceted, and deep-rooted relationship with Ethiopia. He also reiterated his desire to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations, recalling his visit to Ethiopia.
In response, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali thanked Modi, referring to him as a “trusted friend and elder brother.” He emphasized that the relationship between Ethiopia and India is based on history, partnership, and shared aspirations, and both countries are committed to advancing their strategic partnership.
Notably, Prime Minister Modi visited Ethiopia last December for a two-day trip, where he held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, addressed a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament, and toured the Adwa Museum. During this visit, he was honored with Ethiopia’s highest civilian award, the ‘Great Honor Medal of Ethiopia.’
