Budget 2026: Women’s Hostels in Every District, Focus on Astronomy, IIMs to Train 10,000 Guides

New Delhi: The central government has announced a major initiative to build new hostels for female students across the country. This step aims to encourage more women to pursue studies in science and related fields. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted this plan while presenting the budget in Parliament on Sunday.

Many female students often have to move far from home to attend reputed science colleges and technical institutes. However, hostel facilities at these institutions are limited, and some do not have residential hostels at all. This situation causes concern among parents about their daughters’ safety and accommodation. To address this, the government plans to establish dedicated women’s hostels in every district.

According to the Finance Minister’s budget speech, each district will have a women’s hostel to support students studying science, mathematics, technology, and engineering. Since scientific studies require spending considerable time in laboratories and other academic activities, quality hostels will motivate female students to continue their education in these fields.

Focus on Astronomy and Astrophysics

The budget also emphasizes the development of astronomy and astrophysics. The government has proposed setting up four major telescope facilities under the 2026-27 budget. These include the National Large Solar Telescope, National Large Optical-Infrared Telescope, Himalayan Lunar Telescope, and the Cosmos-2 Planetarium. These advanced facilities will promote in-depth research and education in space sciences and astrophysics.

These telescopes will enable Indian researchers to conduct detailed studies of space, boosting the country’s capabilities in this scientific domain. Key institutions such as the Indian Institute of Astrophysics are expected to be involved in this important project.

IIMs to Train Over 10,000 Tourist Guides

In addition, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) will play a significant role in job creation by training more than 10,000 educated tourist guides. Under the supervision of IIMs, an eight-week high-quality course will be offered in a hybrid mode. This training will provide Indian youth with essential knowledge about famous global tourist destinations, linking education directly with employment opportunities.

These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to improving education infrastructure, promoting scientific research, and enhancing employment prospects for young Indians.
