New Delhi, May 7: As temperatures soar, the heat not only affects daily life but also poses several health challenges. Staying hydrated is crucial during this time. Practicing pranayama can be highly beneficial, especially Sheetali Pranayama, which cools the body.
Sheetali Pranayama is a simple yogic breathing technique that provides a cooling effect. Practitioners curl their tongues (or form their lips into an ‘O’) and inhale through the mouth. This process allows cool air to enter the body, reducing heat and calming the mind.
The Ministry of AYUSH in India has highlighted the benefits of Sheetali Pranayama. According to them, it is an effective yogic technique that cools both body and mind. It primarily helps regulate body temperature, reduce high blood pressure, alleviate stress, and address pitta disorders. The technique involves curling the tongue to form a tube and inhaling through the mouth.
This practice calms pitta dosha and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, aiding relaxation and releasing excess heat from the body.
Performing Sheetali Pranayama is quite simple. To practice, sit in Sukhasana or Padmasana in a quiet place on an empty stomach. Stick out your tongue and curl it to form a tube. Then, slowly inhale cool air through your mouth. Hold your breath for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly through your nose. Repeat this process 5 to 10 times.
This pranayama is particularly beneficial during hot weather or when the body feels overheated. It also helps reduce stress and anxiety. It is recommended to practice this only in warm weather. Avoid it if you have conditions like cold, cough, asthma, or low blood pressure.
