Dhaka, 30 December: Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia, passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in Dhaka. The nation is observing a period of mourning. In response to her death, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the postponement of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches scheduled for Tuesday. The decision was made shortly after the news of her demise.
In an official statement, the BCB expressed gratitude for Khaleda Zia’s support towards the development of cricket in Bangladesh. “During her tenure as Prime Minister, she significantly contributed to the growth of cricket in the country. Her support helped improve cricket infrastructure and promoted the sport’s expansion nationwide. Her vision and determination paved the way for the progress seen in the game today,” the statement read.
The board further stated, “To honour the nation’s grief and the legacy of Begum Khaleda Zia, the BPL matches scheduled for Tuesday are postponed. The rescheduling details will be shared in due course.”
Two matches were set to take place on Tuesday in the Bangladesh Premier League. The first match was to be held at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium at 12:30 pm between Sylhet Titans and Chattogram Royals. The second match was scheduled at 5:30 pm between Dhaka Capitals and Rangpur Riders.
Khaleda Zia served as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister twice and was the country’s first female Prime Minister. Her first term was from 1991 to 1996 and the second from 2001 to 2006. She was the wife of former President Ziaur Rahman and had been the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since 1984, a party founded by her late husband. Both Khaleda Zia and her younger son, Arafat Rahman Coco, played key roles in the advancement of cricket in Bangladesh.
