Guwahati, April 7: Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed a public rally in the Hailakandi district on Tuesday, emphasizing the Narendra Modi government’s efforts to promote Assam’s cultural identity while announcing several welfare measures.
Shah stated that Prime Minister Modi has played a crucial role in bringing Assam’s cultural symbols to a global platform. He noted that during the BJP government’s tenure, Assam’s traditional ‘Gamocha’ has gained international recognition. In a veiled attack on Rahul Gandhi, Shah accused the Congress leader of refusing to wear the ‘Gamocha’ during the Republic Day celebrations.
He mentioned that the Modi government has honored the legacy of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan by erecting a grand statue in New Delhi, ensuring that his valor receives worldwide acknowledgment.
Highlighting land rights for tea garden workers, Shah revealed that the BJP government has granted land ownership leases to approximately 350,000 families across 707 tea gardens. He noted that this process has already been completed in 106 gardens across 20 districts in the first phase, aimed at empowering tea garden communities.
The Home Minister also stressed several significant policy decisions, including the abolition of triple talaq, which he claimed was opposed by Congress. He added that the Assam government has transformed 402 madrasas into primary schools under educational reforms.
Supporting the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Shah stated that it would ensure equality by curbing practices like polygamy. He urged voters to support the BJP in the upcoming elections to implement the UCC in the state.
On the welfare front, Shah promised increased financial assistance for farmers, raising the annual aid from ₹6,000 to ₹11,000. He also announced subsidies for tractor purchases for 10,000 farmers and assured the procurement of rice, maize, and mustard at minimum support prices.
Additionally, he pledged that if the BJP returns to power in the state, poor children would receive free education from kindergarten to postgraduate levels, free rice distribution, subsidized essential goods, and a monthly direct benefit transfer of ₹3,000 for women.
Earlier on Tuesday, he sharply criticized Congress during a massive election rally in Patharkandi, Assam’s Shreebhumi district. He asserted that only the BJP can protect the state from illegal immigration and preserve its cultural identity.
Shah claimed that the BJP government has identified infiltrators and promised to remove them one by one if the party returns to power. He alleged that illegal migrants are depriving local youth, poor families, and tea garden workers of jobs, ration benefits, and wages.
He declared, “Infiltration will completely stop with BJP-NDA governments in Assam, West Bengal, and Tripura.”
