Kolkata, February 25: West Bengal courts received bomb threats once again on Wednesday, just a day after similar emails were sent to seven courts in the state.
The latest threats were directed at judges in various district courts, causing panic and prompting increased security measures.
According to police, the first report of a bomb threat came from the Asansol District and Sessions Court. An email was sent to the district judge of Purba Bardhaman, claiming that a bomb had been placed in the court premises and would explode shortly.
Upon receiving the information, Dhruva Das, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Asansol-Durgapur, arrived at the scene and immediately evacuated the entire complex.
A similar situation unfolded at the Suri District Court in Birbhum district, where the district judge also received a threatening email. The message created a tense atmosphere in the courtroom, leading to the precautionary evacuation of everyone present before the scheduled hearing at noon.
The police and bomb disposal squad were promptly notified. By around 2 PM, extensive searches were conducted in both the Asansol and Suri court complexes, but no suspicious items were found.
Officials suspect that this may be a hoax or the work of mischief-makers following a preliminary investigation.
Meanwhile, in the neighboring state of Jharkhand, a bomb scare also emerged at the Dhanbad District Court on Wednesday. An email claimed that RDX was hidden within the court premises. As a precaution, the court complex was evacuated, and a search operation was initiated by the police and bomb disposal team.
Notably, just a day prior, seven courts in the state, including the Calcutta High Court, received similar bomb threats via email. The recurrence of such incidents has created an atmosphere of fear among judges, lawyers, and the general public.
In light of the seriousness of the situation, the state administration convened an urgent high-level meeting at the state secretariat. West Bengal Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty addressed the press, stating that ensuring the safety of the courts is the government’s responsibility and that there is no need for public panic.
She urged the public to disregard rumors and report any suspicious activities to the police immediately. Additionally, the police’s cybercrime unit has launched an investigation to trace the individual or group responsible for sending the threatening emails, examining digital trails.
