New Delhi, June 24: A significant fire erupted early Wednesday morning in a labor settlement near the Industry Building in central Delhi, where workers associated with the Central Vista redevelopment project reside. The blaze rapidly spread throughout the settlement, prompting the Delhi Fire Service to launch an extensive firefighting operation.
Initial reports suggest that a short circuit may have caused the fire. Officials indicated that explosions from commercial and small LPG cylinders exacerbated the situation, allowing the flames to spread quickly.
The fire reportedly began in an electrical panel in the labor shanty area near the Industry Building. Given the severity of the situation, the Delhi Fire Service upgraded the incident to a ‘Make-4’ category fire and deployed multiple firefighting units, including water tenders and fire bikes. Additional water tankers were later summoned to assist in controlling the blaze.
Sandeep Duggal, a regional officer with the Delhi Fire Service, stated, “We received a call around 3:02 AM, and our first fire units arrived on the scene within minutes. Due to the fire’s intensity, the incident was upgraded to Make-4 around 3:24 AM.”
Firefighters worked for several hours to extinguish the flames and prevent them from spreading to nearby buildings. Officials are currently assessing the damage to the labor settlement and investigating the actual cause of the fire. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties.
Earlier on Tuesday, a severe fire broke out in a cluster of shanties in the Valmiki Basti area behind Maulana Azad Medical College, destroying 30 huts along with a large quantity of plywood, wood, and other flammable materials. Despite the fire’s intensity, prompt action from emergency services and police personnel ensured that there were no casualties or injuries reported.
