BJPs Stronghold on SC-ST Seats in Assam and Bengal: NDAs Performance in the South

New Delhi, May 6: The recent assembly elections have showcased a remarkable performance by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Support from voters across various demographics has surged, largely due to the central government’s initiatives. Notably, the BJP and its allied parties have demonstrated significant strength on reserved seats for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in several states.

In Assam and West Bengal, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has garnered substantial backing from these communities. In Assam, the BJP won 5 out of 9 SC reserved seats, while the NDA secured victories in 8 seats overall, with only one seat going to the Congress.

For the 19 ST reserved seats, the BJP achieved victories in 13. Together with allies like the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), the NDA claimed all 19 ST seats.

Analysts suggest that the delimitation process played a crucial role, increasing ST seats from 16 to 19 and SC seats from 8 to 9. Additionally, the BJP’s expansion into tribal areas and upper Assam has contributed to this success.

In West Bengal, the election results indicate a significant political shift regarding reserved seats. The BJP won 51 out of 68 SC seats, capturing nearly 75% of them, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) managed only 17 seats.

The BJP further excelled by winning all 16 ST seats, showcasing dominance in tribal regions like North Bengal and Jangalmahal.

Overall, the BJP secured 67 out of 84 SC-ST seats, leaving the TMC with just 17. Other parties have been nearly wiped out in these constituencies.

Experts believe that the united support from the Matua community has significantly benefited the BJP, especially in SC-majority areas near the borders.

In South India, the NDA also made its presence felt on reserved seats. In Tamil Nadu, the ally AIADMK won 9 out of 46 SC seats and 1 out of 2 ST seats.

In Puducherry, the NDA’s ally, the All India NR Congress, won 2 out of 5 SC reserved seats.

These election results clearly indicate that the BJP and NDA have not only strengthened their traditional support base but have also made significant inroads into historically marginalized communities like SC and ST. Reserved seats are now emerging as a decisive electoral foundation for the BJP in several states.
