Kolkata, May 1: The decision by the Election Commission to conduct re-polling at 15 polling stations in the Magrahat West and Diamond Harbour assembly constituencies of South 24 Parganas district has been welcomed by BJP candidates.
The Election Commission ordered a thorough investigation following complaints of malfunctioning Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and tampering in the Falta assembly constituency.
Suvendu Adhikari, BJP candidate from Bhawanipur and Nandigram, expressed his approval of the re-polling decision, stating, “While the decision for re-polling in Magrahat West is commendable, more booths in Diamond Harbour should also undergo re-polling.”
He added, “Only four booths are set for re-polling there. The entire Falta area should have re-polling, or at least 60 booths should be included.”
When asked why no re-polling order was issued for the Falta assembly constituency, Adhikari remarked, “The Election Commission must have its reasons. There are procedures in place, such as CCTV footage, observer reports, and the presiding officer’s report.”
He emphasized, “There is a set protocol, and the Election Commission is acting accordingly. We have full faith in the Election Commission and do not speak like Mamata Banerjee.”
Arjun Singh, BJP candidate from Noapara, also supported the re-polling decision, stating, “Given the discrepancies with the EVMs, if even one person was unable to cast their vote, it is the Election Commission’s responsibility to conduct re-polling.”
Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh opposed the re-polling decision, alleging that the demand was being forced. He stated, “What they want to do is not right. The voting was peaceful. They are demanding re-polling under duress.”
Ghosh claimed that the Trinamool Congress would win by a significant margin in the booths where re-polling will occur.
The 15 polling stations set for re-polling on Saturday include 11 in Magrahat (West) and 4 in Diamond Harbour. These constituencies had their voting during the second phase of the West Bengal assembly elections on April 29.
