New Delhi, May 31: BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala has responded to comments made by historian Ramachandra Guha regarding Rahul Gandhi’s political future. Poonawala stated that the Congress party should not hold any expectations from Gandhi and raised concerns about his suitability for public life. He also commented on the potential change in leadership in Karnataka, where D.K. Shivakumar is being considered as the next Chief Minister.
In a conversation, Poonawala remarked, “The public has already rejected Rahul Gandhi; he has lost 99 elections. His coalition partners, including the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, DMK, and Shiv Sena, have also distanced themselves from him. Even within the Congress, leaders like Imran Masood have suggested that Priyanka Gandhi should replace Rahul.”
He further noted that Guha’s recent article echoed this sentiment, stating, “Rahul, you cannot do it.” Poonawala described Gandhi as a weary leader who fails to address pressing issues and often retreats abroad, a sentiment echoed by his own supporters. He concluded that Rahul Gandhi is politically inactive and ineffective, suggesting he should seek another profession.
Poonawala added, “What has been happening temporarily in Karnataka, akin to a ‘Game of Thrones’ scenario, is only on pause. The situation is far from resolved. The Congress has exhibited similar instability in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Kerala.”
He emphasized that despite the change in leadership, the fundamental issues remain. “Karnataka is still grappling with a debt of 8 lakh crores. A little rain turns roads into ponds. There is no system in place for law and order or women’s safety. Rahul Gandhi previously spoke about OBC and tribal issues, yet he has removed OBC Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.”
