BJP Nominates Former IAS Debashish Sharma for Naogaon Lok Sabha By-Election

Guwahati, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named former bureaucrat Debashish Sharma as its candidate for the upcoming Naogaon Lok Sabha by-election, set for October 6. This announcement was made in an official statement signed by Tarun Chugh, the party’s in-charge, from their central headquarters in New Delhi.

This decision comes just months after the dramatic departure of former MP Pradyut Bordoloi from the Congress party. Bordoloi resigned from Congress in March and later joined the BJP before contesting the Assam Assembly elections, where he won a seat in Dispur. His departure has left the Naogaon constituency vacant.

The Election Commission has scheduled the counting of votes for October 9. Debashish Sharma, who recently took voluntary retirement from government service, joined the BJP on September 9, sparking immediate speculation about his candidacy for Naogaon.

In response to Sharma’s nomination, the Congress has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission, citing administrative irregularities and questioning Sharma’s political ambitions ahead of the by-election.

This move by the BJP has added a new dimension to the electoral contest, framing it as a battle between administrative experience and political maneuvering. Sharma’s direct administrative ties to Naogaon contrast sharply with the shifting political landscape following Bordoloi’s exit.

For Congress, the challenge lies in retaining a seat it secured in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. For the BJP, this by-election represents an opportunity to leverage Bordoloi’s political shift and further expand its influence in Assam.

As the nomination process closes on September 16, the Naogaon constituency is gearing up for a high-stakes electoral battle.
